Restraining Orders

A restraining order or Apprehended Violence Order (AVO) is an order to protect a person against future violence, harassment, intimidation, stalking or threats to their safety. There are two types of AVOs:

● Apprehended Domestic Violence Order (ADVO): made in circumstances where the people involved have a domestic relationship.

● Apprehended Personal Violence Order (APVO): made in circumstances where the people involved do not have a domestic relationship for example, they are neighbours, friends or work colleagues.

While an AVO is not a criminal charge, breaching an AVO can lead to serious penalties. Further, being the subject of an AVO can place a significant strain on your life and negatively affect your employment opportunities and your ability to maintain relationships with people.
